N.J. state worker accused of stealing $75K by filing false claims

TRENTON — A state Treasury employee is accused of stealing more than $75,000 in taxpayer dollars by filing false claims on behalf of friends and relatives, authorities said.

Stephanie Hargrove, 38, a principal claims investigator for the Division of Risk Management, was charged Thursday with theft by deception and records-tampering, according to the state Division of Criminal Justice.

Authorities say Hargrove, whose job included investigating and processing claims for damages filed against the state, processed multiple fraudulent claims on behalf of people she knew.

Her attorney, Robin Lord, said Hargrove “maintains her innocence as presumed by law.”
