Fears mount in N.J. over potential Coast Guard budget cuts, report says

CAPE MAY — Fears are mounting among New Jersey officials about the potential for President Donald Trump to cut $1.3 billion from the budget for the U.S. Coast Guard, which has its lone training center in Cape May, according to PressofAtlanticCity.com.

The city is dependent on the Coast Guard and any cuts would be devastating, Cape May Mayor Chuck Lear said in the report.

The Coast Guard base in Cape May is the fifth largest in the country. Generating about $174 million, the base helps drive everything from the economy to school enrollment, according to the report.
