Morristown and hospital will try negotiations to settle long-running tax case

After years of fighting in court over property taxes, Morristown and Morristown Medical Center are going to give negotiations a try.

Mayor Tim Dougherty and Brian Gragnolati, president and CEO Atlantic Health System, which owns the hospital, issued a joint statement Thursday afternoon saying they are going to try talks in an effort to end the court case.

The two sides have been battling over whether the 700-bed hospital, which is non-profit and therefore exempt from paying property taxes, still qualifies as a non-profit. About $2.5 million a year are at stake.
