IRVINGTON — Irvington patrol officer Gus Zelles, parked on Springfield Avenue near Ollemar Field, posed for this picture in 1935.
Zelles was patroling a section of the city where a circus was set up. Sometimes, police used sidecars for transporting individuals placed under arrest, other times sidecars were used for carrying equipment. Zelles, who likely was performing crowd control duties, had a first aid kit at the ready, sitting within arm’s reach on his sidecar.
