Mr. Sokov was born in 1941 in a village northwest of Moscow and graduated in 1969 from the Moscow School of Art and Industry. In the 1970s, he became involved in Sots art, which comes from the Russian “Sotsialisticheskiy realism” (“Socialist realism”) and flourished in the days of the Soviet Union’s stagnation under Leonid Brezhnev.
