HOBOKEN, N.J. (AP) — The political fighting is getting uglier in the increasingly popular New York suburb of Hoboken, N.J. In a lawsuit, the head of the Housing Authority accuses the mayor of “a form of urban ethnic cleansing.”
It’s part of a growing rivalry between the city’s old guard and the administration of first-term mayor Dawn Zimmer.
Housing director Carmelo Garcia is challenging a plan to destroy dilapidated public housing and give residents vouchers to relocate.
He says it’s part of an “ethnic cleansing” initiative to replace minorities with affluent whites, including young professionals working in New York.
