Mantua residents sue zoning board over potential bioenergy plant

MANTUA TWP. — Residents who live next to farmland currently slated for use as a renewable energy plant have filed a lawsuit against the township land use board.

The suit, filed by Robert and Robin Gardiner, aims to reverse a zoning variance the board granted to the Estate of Josephine Caltabiano for use by BioMass Alternatives.

The startup company intends to use the land, which is currently zoned for residential and agricultural use, to grow an aquatic plant called duckweed as an alternative energy source. BioMass Alternatives also hopes to run a generation plant on the …read more
