When Joseph Vento first heard about a state-run grant program offering homeowners money to rebuild from Hurricane Sandy, the Voorhees-based general contractor thought it might be an opportunity to pick up some work.
So Vento, president of Glendale Builders., attended a mandatory meeting required for contractors interested in participating in the Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, Elevation and Mitigation program. He left disappointed.
“I thought that if there was one house they were going to award I could help out with one house, maybe two,” he said. “I was not the proper size for the type of contract they were awarding.”
