Alieta Eck might run again after losing Republican U.S. Senate race to Lonegan

TRENTON — Alieta Eck’s sudden jump into New Jersey politics might not have ended with her loss in Tuesday’s special Republican U.S. Senate primary.

Eck, a Somerset County doctor, had never run for elective office before when she took on Steve Lonegan for the GOP’s nomination for the Senate seat vacated after Frank Lautenberg’s death. Two months was all she had to put together a campaign.

She ended up losing to Lonegan, the former mayor of Bogota, by 60 percent Tuesday night. Lonegan will now face Democratic Newark Mayor Cory Booker in the general election.
